TORONTO ELECTION 2006 - BREAKING RECORDS

A NEW FACE IN EACH WARD - first time in decades!

The autumn election in Toronto is gearing up to be one of the largest and most highly contested elections in Toronto's history.

  • With one month still left to go before nominations close, we have already surpassed the number of candidates registered to run for City Councillor in either Megacity election; 1997 or 2000.

  • All across the city, Torontonians are putting their names on the ballot in numbers higher than we've ever seen before - with Ward 26 topping the charts with an unprecedented 15 candidates!

  • According to our research, 2006 is the first election in at least 50 years to have a new face running in every single ward race. Torontonians are challenging their incumbent Councillors with a newfound passion for change.

  • There are also no acclaimed candidates for City Council this year, only the second time in over half a century and perhaps only the second time in the entire history of Toronto.

We'd like to congratulate all the groups and individuals who have been working to get more people involved with this election. We're proud to be playing our part! Our "How to Run" page has been viewed 2,500 times while 218 people have downloaded nomination papers directly from our website.

With one month left to register, we look forward to seeing more names on the ballot, more voices being heard and more choices for voters!

Sadly, with our antiquated voting system, many incumbents will once again win their seats with less than 50% of the vote. They'll get four more years at City Hall even though most of their ward voted against them. More on that another day...

For now, we congratulate the 200+ candidates who have put their names forward to run for City Councillor and have made this a record-breaking election.

Let's make this election count!
