| "The
most diverse city in the world" is what we like to call ourselves.
"Diversity our Strength" is our city's motto. But Toronto City Council looks a lot like the Toronto Maple Leafs. And this election saw the numbers go down even further. Here's some stats: |

No
new women were elected to City Council in 2006. In addition, four women
on Council left city politics since 2003 and all four were replaced by men
on November 13th. Out of Scarborough's ten seats, zero are now held by women. For more information about women's issues at City Hall, visit the "Toronto Women's Call to Action" website. |

The
election is over and the make-up of City Council won't change for four years,
but Councillors can help compensate for lack of diversity by hiring a diverse
staff team. Because as white as Council is, the political staff at City Hall is even whiter, including the Mayor's office. Click here to read the 2006 report "The Municipal Franchise and Social Inclusion in Toronto" for some great ideas about addressing social and political exclusion in Toronto. |
